![]() Kentucky Coffee Tree The Kentucky Coffee Tree, Gymnocladus Dioicus, may also be known as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogony, nicker treet, or stump tree. Kentucky Coffee trees are large round-barked trees belonging to the legume family and reaches heights of 60 to 100 feet. Its short trunk, 1 to 2 feet in diameter, divides into several large branches. The leaves are ovalish and are 2-4 inches long. An unofficial state tree of Kentucky, the Kentucky Coffee Tree is closely related to the honeylocust. This deciduous tree is ideal as a shade tree on larger, ungroomed properties. It got its name because early North American colonists used the large seeds to make coffee. When eaten raw, the seeds are poisonous. The bark is deeply furrowed and dark brown in colour. It adapts well to urban conditions. Fall color is yellow turning to orange.

Cucumbertree Magnolia The Magnolia, Cucumbertree, Magnolia acuminata, is a little known tree that has considerable landscape merit. It has a very regular, pyramidal form with a strong central leader as a young tree, and then becomes rounded with age. The 2" to 3" flowers are a greenish yellow and emerge after the tree is in leaf. They are not very noticeable because they blend into the foliage and may not be produced until the tree is fairly old. The fruit looks somewhat like a small, bumpy cucumber and turns pinkish red in late summer. Songbirds, squirrels and mice eat the seeds. With a medium to fast growth rate, Cucumber Magnolia is an exceptional tree for large properties and prefers moist, deep, acid soil and full sun.

Mimosa Tree The Mimosa tree, Albizzia julibrissin, sometimes called Silk tree, was introduced to the United States in 1745 for use as an ornamental plant because of its unusual, attractive and fragrant pom-pom like flowers and interesting fern-like foliage.This deciduous tree is attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds. In gardens this tree grows to 20–30'. Mimosa trees are fast-growing but rather short-lived. It has a single trunk with smooth gray bark. Each bipinnate leaf is made up of hundreds of tiny leaflets coated in white hairs, giving the foliage a silvery cast. In late winter or spring the domed crown is decked in sprays of small, globular, golden yellow flower heads. It is able to survive winter in southern U.S., but flowers better in climates with a longer, drier summer.

Sassafras Tree The Sassafras tree, Sassafrax variifolium, also known as the Sassafrac, Saxifrac, Smelling Stick, Aguetree, and Cinnamonwood tree. This widespread Eastern U.S. native is ideal for naturalistic landscaping. Sassafras is a native tree, growing in rich woods from southern Maine to Ontario, Michigan, and Kansas and south to Florida and Texas. The sassafras occurs in the North as a shrub, but in the Southern States it sometimes attains a height of 100 feet. This deciduous tree has leaves that are shaped like a mitten. The yellowish green, fragrant flowers are borne in clusters which appear in early spring. The fruit, which ripens in September, is about the size of a pea. All parts of the tree are aromatic. The bark of the root, which is in reasonably constant demand is collected in spring or autumn. The production of sassafras oil by distillation of the root and root bark is a small industry in the southeastern section of the country. Leaves are a medium green and turn orange, red, or yellow in fall.

Harvest tomatoes when they are in full color for most flavor.

The white flowers bloom from July to August, however, Hosta’s are not known for their flowers. With a plant height of 20” and a spread of 36”, Hosta’s provide bright color in shade with wonderful foliage. Hosta ‘Christmas Tree’ needs to be planted in a full shade location in any moist, well-drained area. This low care perennial is ideal for shady positions, tubs and patio pots, and it is one of the most popular landscape plants. A great choice for any beginner gardener.

May Day Tree The May Day Tree, Prunus padus 'European Bird Cherry', is one of the first trees to leaf out in spring. European Bird Cherry is generally described as a perennial tree or shrub and has dark-green summer foliage that turns yellow to red in fall. The white flowers are large and fragrant and appear in early May. They are borne in slender drooping clusters. It differs from other wild and garden cherries in having flowers in long cylindrical spikes. The fruit is black, about 1/3” or less, and taken by the birds. This low-branched tree is rounded to about 15-20’. May Day Tree is available in single stem and clump form. The European Bird Cherry has a moderate life span relative to most other plant species and a moderate growth rate. This small-fruited cherry tree is frequented or fed on by birds!

Double Flowering Plum - Tree Form Double Flowering Plum - Tree Form, 'Prunus triloba', is a hardy, vigorous growing tree that is noted for its double pink flowers produced in profusion in April-May. These fully double hot pink flowers completely smother the branches in early spring long before the leaves emerge. It is a showstopper in May across in northern areas! Double Flowering Plum - Tree Form has a rounded head shape with medium green foliage in summer, and then develops a yellow-bronze fall color. It grows 10-12 feet in height. It is hardy to zone 2, which means that it will reliably leaf out every year in pretty well the coldest parts of the Northscaping region. Double flowering plum needs lots of sun and lots of space to look its best. It will tolerate a wide range of soils as long as they are extremely well drained.

It is one of the very few yellow flowering trees. This deciduous tree is excellent as a small lawn tree, or for shading a patio. Golden Raintrees display a beautiful show of fall color with 2 inch golden seed pods against a dark green-leafed background. The seed pods look like tiny Chinese lanterns. It has rounded outline, spreading and ascending branches, open, reddish copper-colored foliage in the spring. It is a tough and an adaptable tree used for many landscaping applications. They are very tolerant of polluted air environments.

Goldenrain Tree-Chin. Flame The Chinese Flame tree, Koelreuteria bipinnata, is a deciduous tree that has a round canopy. It is a medium to rapid growing tree with medium green oval leaves. The beautiful yellow flowers, 2" long, in clusters 8-14" long, bloom June-August. The seed pods are long and orange, red or salmon-colored papery in color. They are lantern-like in appearance, form in fall. Chinese Flame trees are drought tolerant and can tolerate poor drainage, poor soils, smog and temperature extremes. It does best in full sun. The deep, non-invasive roots rarely disturb sidewalks. The beautiful flower clusters attract birds and bees.

Green Smoketree The Green Smoketree, Cotinus coggygria, is a deciduous shrub/tree. The branches are spreading, loose, and as wide as high. Green Smoketrees have bluish green, sometimes yellow like leaves. Their fall color is red-purple. This deciduous tree has showy pubescent pedicels and peduncles of flowers that provide the "smoke" appearance. Smoketrees like sun. It is a tough tree that is adaptable to widely divergent soils and pH ranges, and it is very drought resistant. It is a great accent tree.
